Rotary or Cylinder: Which Should You Buy?

The choice depends mainly on your grass and the finish you want. Cylinder mowers, including our push, roller-type and electric roller models, shear grass against a fixed edge and give the finest result on short, regularly mown lawns. Rotary mowers use a spinning blade, so they tolerate taller or patchier growth and uneven surfaces better, though the cut is less precise. If your lawn is mown only occasionally, or the surface is far from billiard-table smooth, a rotary is probably the better fit.

Electric or Petrol Power?

The two electric models plug into a single-phase supply, so they suit lawns near a power point and avoid fuel handling. The petrol Jupiter is self-contained, which lets it work on larger or remote lawns without a cable. Its four-stroke engine runs on petrol, with oil held separately, so there is no fuel mixing to get wrong.

Choosing the Right Cutting Width

A 12-inch deck is easy to manoeuvre around beds and trees. The 19-inch and 21-inch Jupiter models cover more ground per pass, which saves time on open lawns, at the cost of needing more room to turn. Match the width to the narrowest gap you need to mow through.

Getting the Best Cut from a Rotary Mower

Keep the blades sharp, because a dull blade tears grass tips and leaves a pale, ragged finish. Never remove more than about a third of the grass height in one pass; if the lawn has grown long, raise the deck and cut twice. Disconnect the power or remove the spark plug lead before touching the blades, and keep hands and feet clear of the deck. Empty the grass box regularly so the airflow keeps clippings moving.
