An electric lawn mower makes sense when your lawn is close to a power point and you would rather not deal with petrol, oil or pull-starts. Unison Engg. Industries builds roller-type electric mowers in Jalandhar, Punjab, with single-phase motors, a multi-blade cutting cylinder, a grass box and a handle supplied as standard. The range is aimed at medium-sized lawns in homes and institutions.
Four Electric Models at a Glance
- 16-inch Black Panther: roller type with a clutch, 6-blade cylinder, 1 HP single-phase motor running at 1440 RPM. Cutting height ranges from 3/4 to 2 inches at 50 cuts per metre.
- 18-inch with 1 HP motor: roller-type power mower without a clutch, 6-blade cylinder, complete with grass box and handle.
- Electro Lawn Boy: side-wheel design with ball bearings in the wheels and lay shaft pulley, five-blade cylinder, 1 HP single-phase Crompton motor and a 20-inch (500 mm) cutting width.
- Lawn King: the step up at 2 HP single-phase, 20-inch width and a six-blade cylinder, with ball bearings in the rollers and lay shaft pulley.
All four ship complete with a grass box and handle.
Clutch, Motor Power and Cutting Width
Choosing between these comes down to a few practical points. A 1 HP motor is well matched to a regular home lawn that is mown often; the 2 HP Lawn King gives more reserve when grass has grown a little long or the lawn is larger. The 16-inch Black Panther is the only version listed with a clutch, which lets you disengage the cutting cylinder while moving the mower between areas. Wider 20-inch models cover more ground per pass, but need a bit more space to turn at lawn edges.
What Electric Power Means in Practice
Electric mowers are a clean option: there is no fuel to store, no exhaust at the lawn and fewer parts to service than a petrol engine. The trade-off is reach, since the mower works from a mains supply and you will want to plan the cable route before you start.
